This painting was my first attempt at finding balance between competing layers of expressive painting. I was looking to achieve harmony not only in terms of colour but also texture by masking some areas to a clean line. These parts contrast with the expressive drips and splashes elsewhere in the piece and help to form a coherent whole.
Like much of my work that followed, the method used reflects my appreciation for the importance of moderation and balance (hence the title) which are important guiding principles in my life, but also a wider appreciation of the forces that govern nature and the laws of the universe.
